Robotics are Finally Catching up to AI
Google DeepMind introduced Mobile ALOHA, an open source robotic system capable of kitchen tasks like sautéing shrimp and tidying up. The robot can be taught actions by a human operator, and eventually be deployed autonomously to do these tasks by itself.
The robot is capable of doing things like pushing chairs under a table, opening and closing cabinets, and cooking a 3-course-meal.
The Robot Constitution
The researchers responsible for these new robotic developments have come out with a new “Robot Constitution”. This indicates that robotics are going to get serious in 2024, and we will see mass distribution by the end of this year.
These are the three laws researchers came up with:
Foundational Rules: These are based on Asimov's three laws and dictate how robots interact with humans.
Safety Rules: These outline tasks that are unsafe or not desired, like avoiding interaction with humans or animals, and not handling sharp or fragile items or electrical equipment.
Embodiment Rules: These are about the robot's physical limitations, such as how much weight it can carry and that it only has one arm, preventing it from doing tasks needing two arms.
Augmented Mentality in 2024
This week I read an interesting article about the concept of 'augmented mentality', with AI poised to enhance our mental and social capabilities in 2024. This will be the year of augmented reality, ChatGPT in real time, at all times. This advancement suggests a near future where AI aids in informed decision-making and interpersonal interactions: This excerpt from the beginning of the article explains the premise well:
”In the near future, an AI assistant will make itself at home inside your ears, whispering guidance as you go about your daily routine. It will be an active participant in all aspects of your life, providing useful information as you browse the aisles in crowded stores, take your kids to see the pediatrician — even when you grab a quick snack from a cupboard in the privacy of your own home.”
Is Generative AI Facing a Reckoning?
Both ChatGPT and Midjourney are in trouble over copyright. Last week, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging unauthorized use of its content to train AI models. They’re apparently not only seeking billions in damages, but advocating for the destruction of GPT-4.
Midjourney is also facing legal challenges, with a training database naming 16000 artists being leaked this week revealing thousands of copyrighted images used including Banksy, Walt Disney and many more, as well as smaller artists.
This uncharted legal territory could slow down the AI industry's expansion, as lawsuits over copyrights raise questions about the training of AI models and potentially reshape the industry's approach to data usage. It remains to be seen whether this will hinder the speed of development of AGI or ASI.
STEM Education in the Age of AI
Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides cautions against an exclusive focus on STEM, emphasizing the importance of creative and empathetic skills in an AI-dominated world. He suggests that certain IT roles may become obsolete due to AI advancements, underscoring the need for skills that are less replaceable by technology.
This insight urges a reevaluation of educational priorities, highlighting the importance of a balanced skill set in the evolving job market.
Text-to-Video Has Made Serious Progress
The progress in AI-generated video over the past few months has been remarkable. While we're still at a stage where the clips are short and feature minimal movement, it's a significant leap from just a few months ago when AI struggled to create cohesive images at all:

It's exciting to imagine where we'll be in the near future, as these tools become more refined and capable of producing increasingly complex and dynamic video content.

2024 Predictions
I read this interesting article from Venturebeat on 2024 AI predictions. Here’s what I took from it:
AI will be utilized in innovative ways across various industries, leading to significant progress. Here are some shifts we expect to see this year.
Focus on AI Agents: Development will increasingly concentrate on AI agents, enhancing their impact across sectors. There will be major development on AI using technology independently, or via voice or text commands. This includes software, browsers, and much more. Imagine sitting in front of your computer, commanding it to open photoshop, edit your video on premiere pro, visit your email and send a report.
AI Vision: A major breakthrough with AI's ability to process visual data, enhancing multimodal capabilities, this paired with real time responses from LLM’s & the ability to run locally on our devices will create live, 24/7 assistant that will help us with daily tasks:
”Already, we are seeing the development of wearable devices that promise to assist us in our day-to-day life. For example, they can provide background information on people we interact with, visual cues connected to our work or real-time suggestions for completing a task.”Manipulation Risks: The potential for AI-powered manipulation poses new challenges, necessitating careful management of AI's societal impact:
”We have always, as human beings, lived with the possibility of misinformation, and one of our biggest weapons to combat it has been social proof. “If others trust this, then it must be trustworthy” is no longer an effective principle, for the simple reason that we cannot be sure who is real and who is an AI bot.”
